A Blog About Testing All Things,

Then Holding To That Which Is True

Isa. 1:18 “Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the LORD, “Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool.”

NKJV

Hello and welcome to my Christian blog! I am a disciple of Jesus Christ and a student of God’s word. I am a former Mormon who was born and raised in Mormonism (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or LDS). Only in the past few years have I truly discovered the Bible and have come to discover my former faith path was not the correct path back to God. Mormonism heavily influenced my life for both good and bad. Because of this, there will be a lot of references to my former religion in my blog posts. My purpose is to tell about how I discovered truth from what I previously believed, however, I am not trying to bash on my former church out of resentment. I only want to point out inconsistencies and false beliefs with evidence in order to explain my faith journey and discoveries that led me to reject Mormonism. I love the members of my former church, but unfortunately many leaders of the LDS Church have been dishonest about a lot of doctrine and practices and I seek to bring those things to light. As I said before, the LDS Church is full of wonderful people who desire to do what is right. My spouse, children, parents and siblings are all Mormons and I look up to them in so many ways. I am the only one among them who has rejected Mormonism, therefore, I am alone and probably viewed as deceived, weak in testimony, spiritually lost, extreme in my beliefs and an apostate. Yes, they still love me, but they avoid asking me anything about what I believe and still have not asked me why I left. It’s as though they are afraid that if they ask, they might become infected with the “disease” that led me out of Mormonism. Well, I will stand and say that all beliefs should be tested, we must reason together and questions are the way God intended us to discover truth! Truth has no fear of the light! Even one of the Mormon prophets stated:

“If a faith will not bear to be investigated; if its preachers and professors
are afraid to have it examined, their foundation must be very weak.”

George A. Smith–Journal of Discourses 14:216

And yet, Mormon leaders continue preaching and warning their members to only read and listen to “church approved” material and stay away from literature and people who question the church or disagree with the church in any way. They teach in their sermons that apostates are blind to the truth, weak, under Satan’s influence, renegades, drunk, spiritually bankrupt, lazy, stagnant, swamp dwellers, and tantrum-throwing children who run away from home. All these expressions have been used by LDS leaders when preaching about people who leave the LDS Church. Recently, the current president of the LDS church (Russell Nelson) called those who question and leave the church “lazy learners” and “lax disciples”. It has been my experience that the majority of those who question and leave the church are just the opposite of his labels. Most people research extensively until making a decision to leave. I would call them truth seekers. Also most people do not originally go seeking out the information that caused them to leave. They just happen to stumble across something that makes them wonder then they start trying to find answers and begin discovering that they were lied to by the LDS church. I was among those who stumbled onto things and tried to find answers. I am a natural born researcher so I probably did more research than most. Unlike most LDS members who leave, I held onto my belief in God and Christ and Their Gospel. Unfortunately most throw the baby out with the bath water so to speak. Many become atheists, or turn to Buddhism or New Age practices. It is very revealing what the Mormon leaders think about people who leave the LDS church and they teach their members to think the same way as a means of controlling what their members read, listen to and who they associate with. The LDS leadership does not want their members to think for themselves as seen in the following quote from one of it’s church publications.

Any Latter-day Saint who denounces or opposes, whether actively or otherwise, any plan or doctrine advocated by the prophets, seers, and revelators of the Church is cultivating the spirit of apostasy…. It should be remembered that Lucifer has a very cunning way of convincing unsuspecting souls that the General Authorities of the Church are as likely to be wrong as they are to be right. This sort of game is Satan’s favorite pastime, and he has practiced it on believing souls since Adam. He wins a great victory when he can get members of the Church to speak against their leaders and to “do their own thinking…When our leaders speak, the thinking has been done. When they propose a plan—it is God’s plan. When they point the way, there is no other which is safe. When they give direction, it should mark the end of controversy. ”

Improvement Era, June 1945, p. 354

With the internet becoming such an integral part of our lives, it has opened up and brought to light so much information about the LDS Church that has been hidden, covered and buried for such a long time. Because of this, the LDS Church has been experiencing a huge exodus from it’s membership. What was once considered apostate and false information by the LDS Church now cannot be denied as truthful fact about the church’s history and has now had to be dealt with by the leaders of the LDS Church. In response to this, they have composed a series of essays on their website where they attempt to explain these things that have now come to light. This brings me to a couple other purposes of this blog:

  • I want to encourage others to prove or test all things in order to know for sure what truth is. I did not practice this much in my life until a few years ago, but doing it has made all the difference. It is my hope that you will incorporate this practice into your life so that truth can be discovered and deception will be avoided as much as possible. It has been a lonely road leaving behind the religious beliefs of my childhood, youth and most of my adulthood. I was fully committed to the LDS faith, so it has been a painful and jarring journey to discover the truth, but at the same time, it has been a glorious, enlightening and freeing journey. I have never felt so alone of human companionship in this truth trek and yet so close to God the Father and to my Savior, Jesus Christ. It was an extremely difficult and emotional process to discover that I had been living many lies unknowingly and to be faced with the fact that I had been lied to all those years. God gave us an intellect so that we can think for ourselves. We need to use that intellect to test all things of man. The other purpose of this blog is that:
  • I love sharing cool new things that I’ve learned about God, Jesus Christ and the Gospel and I really don’t have others to share these things with around me, so a blog is also an outlet for me to share with others. I encourage you to read my first three posts as a foundation to my other posts. The first is called The Truth About Truth–What Is It? (Part 1), the second is called The Truth About Truth–How To Discover It (Part 2) and the third is called Is The Bible A Trustworthy Source Of Truth?

Truth matters! It is truth that will overcome all the lies, deceit and evil of this world. Truth is the ammunition we must use in fighting against the enemy of truth, the great deceiver. Truth is the foundation of life! God is Truth and so is His Son, Jesus the Messiah. I love truth and have aspired to seek it all my life, however, when my proverbial “shelf” came crashing down, I asked God to show me the truth no matter what that would look like and He took me by the hand and led me in His word. Facing truth requires drastic change sometimes. That is why I wrote the phrase under the title of my blog–“It is better to walk alone, than with a crowd going in the wrong direction”. I thought I was going in the right direction in Mormonism but little by little my eyes were opened to truth. God showed me where I had been blind. He opened my eyes and in the process, gave me a new heart! The verses in John 9:25-26 of the blind man being healed, took on such a personal meaning to me.

John 9:25-26 He answered and said, “Whether He is a sinner or not I do not know. One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see.” Then they said to him again, “What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?”

NKJV

This blind man was set free of physical blindness by Jesus, The Living Word. What a beautiful way to point to a spiritual liberation for those who believe in God’s written word! How did He open my eyes and heal my spiritual blindness? The answer is by the truth in His written word! The truth has truly set me free! Free of fear, control and manipulation of those who seek to hide or deny the truth. I am forever grateful to Him for saving me–a sinner!

I do not claim to have all the answers nor do I claim to know all the truth. I make mistakes and err many times. I am human, fallen and flawed. I welcome correction based in God’s word. I, like you, am learning and growing daily. If I ever discover that I have unknowingly expressed something false, I will do my best to correct it. I have found that the more we come to understand and know God’s written word, the more clear the truth becomes in our lives. That is why Jesus taught and lived His Father’s word every day of His mortal ministry–to open the spiritually blind eyes. Those who spread His gospel of good news in biblical times, encouraged disciples to gather together often and to lift one another and teach one another in truth. This still applies today. We can gather in person and thankfully also online to lift and teach one another. Because God has been so merciful and kind to me, I wanted to share what truths I have discovered in my journey along The Way and encourage others to discover truth. I hope that many truth treasures will be unearthed in God’s word along your journey as well, and that there may be something expressed here that will touch someone’s heart, awaken a spiritually sleepy mind and hopefully assist in pointing someone to the only one who can save us–God through His Beloved Son, Jesus the Messiah!
